Matching Lesson

Lesson

The activity I would like to teach is matching upper case and lower case letters to each other.  In order to do this I will use the website: www.22learn.com.  I will be using this website in a guided activity with my Kindergarten class.  I would use my Promethean board to guide the lesson so they can visually see the directions as well as hear the directions.

Directions:
·      Log into your iPads with your number.
·      Click on the 22learn app
·      Click on Matching A-a button
·      The mother fish have lost their babies. Match the fish with the lowercase letters to their mother with the upper case letters.
·      If you are not sure, click on a fish and it will say the letter.
·      Match until all the fish have found their mother.

I would have all students come to the carpet area with their iPads and put on their lap.  We would talk about upper and lower case letters and point out examples in the room.  What words have upper case letters in them? (their name).  I would have the app up on my Promethean board.  As a class, I would show the app and game we intend to complete.  After modeling, I would ask for questions.  When done with explanation, I would have them log into their iPad and click on the app.  We would have a guided lesson on matching and after guiding, I would have them find their spot in the room to continue playing.

  1. This sounds like fun! I am curious how you keep kindergartners on task when using the iPads. I think it is great if they can receive training at such a young age in how to stay focused on the learning activity. You seem to have a system for demonstrating the activity first, then guiding them through it as a group, and finally letting them play the game on their own. It looks like there are many other apps available to continue using this technology for learning.

  2. This is a great activity for little kids. Developmentally it's spot on as I'm working on a lot of the same activities with my 4.5 year old. Which specific 22learn app are you using? I assume it's one from the phonics/lettering bundle?

  3. Hi John,

I am using the 22learn app and then using the Preschool Letter Quiz app. It is for both Kindergarten and Preschool and was free.

  4. IPads and Kindergarten can be a challenge. Our Preschool program also has iPads. They stay on task for the most part because it is something new and different and thus lies my challenge. If I integrate technology, they are common and more apt to be less engaging. I feel pressure to always change the activity because if they get bored with it, I will have many off task behaviors. So I feel that using it less frequently versus daily benefits my learners. Would you agree? I'd be interested in your thoughts.
